A machine learning framework using only inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors—without surface electromyography (sEMG) during real-world use—can detect calf muscle fatigue with over 90% accuracy, according to a new study published in the Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology.
Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras developed the approach to overcome the practical limitations of sEMG in continuous fatigue monitoring, including its sensitivity to noise, electrode placement, and motion artifacts. Rather than relying on sEMG during deployment, the team used it exclusively in the training phase to generate accurate fatigue labels, enabling the development of IMU-only classification models.
Participants performed fatigue-inducing calf exercises, and the researchers compared EMG-derived indicators—root mean square (RMS) and median frequency—with multiple IMU features to identify those most strongly aligned with EMG behavior. These selected IMU features were then used to train a Random Forest classifier for binary classification and a feedforward neural network for multi-class analysis.
The Random Forest model achieved 90.53% accuracy for the right calf and 90.19% for the left in binary classification. The neural network achieved 81.42% and 84.67% accuracy in multi-class classification. Subject-wise three-class analysis further improved Random Forest accuracy to 92.9% and 91.96%, respectively.
The researchers conclude that IMU-based models can reliably detect calf muscle fatigue in a non-invasive, continuous manner, making them well-suited for applications in sports performance monitoring, injury prevention, clinical rehabilitation, and occupational settings involving prolonged standing or repetitive lower-limb movements.
