📖 *Resilience and coping in collegiate athletes during the COVID-19 pandemic: A pilot study* |
Collegiate athletes carry a double burden — academic and athletic — and the COVID-19 pandemic piled on cancelled competitions, disrupted training, and deep uncertainty about the future. A pilot study now identifies which coping strategies distinguish resilient athletes from those who struggle.
Researchers at Louisiana State University surveyed 56 Division 1 collegiate athletes using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and the Brief COPE inventory. The study examined the relationship between coping styles and resilience during the pandemic.
Athletes with higher resilience scores used significantly more active coping and acceptance (p<0.01) and less behavioral disengagement (p<0.05). Older age and greater use of adaptive coping skills predicted resilience, together accounting for 42.2% of the variance (R2=0.4224, p=0.0000). Acceptance — acknowledging uncontrollable circumstances and redirecting energy toward actionable areas — emerged as a particularly powerful strategy.
The findings suggest that resilience in collegiate athletes is less about innate toughness and more about learnable coping patterns. This has direct implications for athlete support programs.
Limitations include a small sample size (N=56), the unique context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a cross-sectional design that prevents causal inference.
Athletic programs should incorporate adaptive coping skills training — particularly acceptance and active coping — rather than relying on generic motivational messaging. Teaching athletes to distinguish between controllable and uncontrollable stressors and to redirect energy accordingly can build resilience more effectively.
