Combat athletes live and die by explosive power. Whether throwing a punch, executing a takedown, or driving off the mat, the ability to generate force in a split second separates contenders from champions. But what drives that explosiveness beyond training volume and technique? A new study points toward an often-overlooked factor: the body's antioxidant status and energy availability.
Researchers from Nanjing University of Technology and Nanjing Sport Institute conducted a cross-sectional study on 25 high-level combat athletes in active training. Published in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living in 2026, the study measured one energy marker (plasma ATP), three antioxidant defense markers (total antioxidant capacity [T-AOC], superoxide dismutase [SOD], glutathione peroxidase [GPX]), and one oxidative damage marker (malondialdehyde [MDA]). These were then correlated against six strength-performance tests: standing long jump, vertical jump, medicine ball throw, one-rep max (1RM) bench press, 1RM squat, and a 30-meter sprint.
The standout finding was the relationship between plasma ATP and explosive output. ATP was positively correlated with standing long jump (r=0.449) and vertical jump (r=0.502), while body fat percentage showed a negative correlation with vertical jump (r=-0.529, p<0.05). Among sport disciplines, boxers displayed significantly higher SOD activity than other combat athletes. Female athletes had lower T-AOC than male counterparts (p=0.011). While no multiple regression model reached statistical significance -- largely due to the small sample -- Bayesian regression confirmed similar directional patterns, with positive posterior estimates for ATP in explosive and strength outcomes.
The findings are hypothesis-generating rather than definitive. The cross-sectional design and sample of just 25 athletes mean causality cannot be established. Larger longitudinal or randomized controlled studies are needed to determine whether antioxidant interventions or targeted nutritional protocols can meaningfully shift explosive performance metrics.
For combat athletes and their support teams, the practical takeaway is clear: take oxidative load seriously, especially during high-intensity training blocks. After demanding sessions, prioritize antioxidant-rich foods -- berries, green tea, leafy greens, and coenzyme Q10 sources. Monitoring body fat alongside explosive performance testing gives coaches a more complete picture of readiness. Given the observed sex differences in T-AOC, female combat athletes may particularly benefit from regular antioxidant nutritional screening.
