How much can children's motor fitness improve from posture correction exercises alone during school PE? A team from the University of Belgrade, Serbia, answered this question experimentally.
They assigned 255 ten-year-old students (195 girls) from three elementary schools to either an experimental group (94) or a control group (161). The experimental group followed a 4-month corrective gymnastics program during regular PE classes, targeting five common postural disorders. The control group followed the standard PE curriculum.
Both groups improved significantly across all motor domains, but the corrective gymnastics group showed significantly greater gains in plate tapping (speed of limb movement), standing long jump, sit-ups, and shuttle run performance (F = 7.718-30.983, p < 0.01).
Corrective gymnastics simultaneously improves not only posture but also strength, agility, coordination, movement speed, and flexibility. Applying such programs during a critical developmental period can promote both postural health and functional physical development.
This research has significant policy implications: integrating corrective gymnastics into regular PE provides equitable access to preventive healthcare and functional physical development for all children, without requiring additional time or specialized facilities.
