Creatine monohydrate is one of the most extensively researched supplements in sports nutrition, consistently demonstrating efficacy for high-intensity, short-duration performance. But the question of whether co-ingesting creatine with carbohydrates and protein produces additive benefits for repeated sprint performance has not been clearly resolved - until now.
A study published in Scientific Reports randomized 60 male participants (age 21 +/- 2.8 years) into four supplementation groups: creatine alone (CR), creatine with carbohydrates (CRCHO), creatine with carbohydrates and protein (CRCPS), or placebo (PLA). Participants completed three consecutive 30-second Wingate Anaerobic Tests (WAnTs) separated by six-minute recovery intervals at both baseline and two days following a four-day supplementation protocol.
After supplementation, body mass increased in the CR, CRCHO, and CRCPS groups (p<0.05), consistent with creatine-induced water retention from elevated intramuscular phosphocreatine stores. Performance outcomes diverged meaningfully between groups. CRCHO and CRCPS demonstrated higher absolute and relative mean power by 5-10% compared with baseline across all three trials (p<0.01). CR showed increased absolute mean power across all three trials. Critically, the placebo group experienced significant decrements in mean power during the second and third trials (p<0.01) - reflecting the natural fatigue accumulation of three consecutive maximal efforts without ergogenic support.
All supplementation groups improved absolute and relative peak power across trials (p<0.01), while placebo improved only in the third trial. CRCPS produced the highest post-exercise blood lactate concentrations, suggesting maximal glycolytic engagement and full metabolic effort utilization.
For athletes preparing for repeated sprint competitions - team sports, combat sports, track cycling, rowing - these findings provide guidance for acute supplementation loading strategies. The co-ingestion of carbohydrates and protein with creatine appears to enhance sustained mean power output compared with creatine alone or placebo, particularly in later high-fatigue efforts. Consulting a sports dietitian to align supplementation timing and dosing with individual training goals remains the recommended approach.
