연구는 2026년 4월 American Journal of Sports Medicine에 게재됐다.

In the NFL, approximately one in four players sustains a lower extremity (LEX) strain each season, with nearly 20% of those injuries occurring in the first two weeks of training camp. A landmark study published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine demonstrates that a data-driven policy intervention reduced league-wide LEX strains by 35% over two years.
Researchers from IQVIA, the NFL, and multiple team organizations analyzed injury data from the league-wide electronic medical record combined with wearable player tracking data and practice schedules for all players participating during the 2018-2023 seasons.
Analysis of 2018-2021 data across 82 club-seasons identified five distinct preseason acclimation practice schedule strategies used during the first three days of training camp: a gradual 15-minute ramp (increasing duration by 15 minutes each day), a less-than-10-minute ramp, high-low duration variation, stable duration, and a reverse ramp (decreasing duration). Clubs using the gradual 15-minute ramp, less-than-10-minute ramp, or high-low variation had significantly lower training camp LEX strain rates compared to the other strategies (incidence rate ratio = 0.81; 95% CI, 0.68-0.95; p = 0.01).
These findings were communicated to NFL and NFL Players Association stakeholders before the 2022 preseason, leading to the mandatory implementation of a gradual practice acclimation ramp as part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, coupled with individual club education sessions.
The policy worked. League-wide LEX strain incidence during training camp decreased from 288 injuries in 2021 to 215 in 2022 and 186 in 2023 — a 35% reduction. Recurrent LEX strains in the regular season dropped from 22 per year in 2021 to 11 per year in 2022-2023, a 50% reduction.
This study represents one of the most compelling examples of data-driven load management translating into real-world injury prevention at scale. The approach — using existing electronic medical records and wearable tracking data to identify evidence-based practice patterns, then translating findings into enforceable policy — offers a model that other leagues and sports organizations could adapt.
