Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has attracted considerable interest as a natural adaptogen with potential ergogenic properties, but evidence in competitive athletes — particularly over short supplementation windows — has been limited. A new randomized controlled trial from Portugal specifically evaluated the effects of an acute 8-day supplementation period in handball players.
Researchers from the Polytechnic Institute of Maia enrolled 31 male amateur handball players (mean age 20.3 ± 3.1 years) in a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial. Participants received either 600 mg/day of standardized Ashwagandha root extract or placebo. Assessments of knee extension and flexion strength, handgrip strength, perceived muscle soreness, fatigue, and total quality of recovery (TQR) were conducted at baseline, day 4, and day 8. The study was published in Nutrition and Health.
The primary positive finding was a significant improvement in handgrip strength in the Ashwagandha group compared to placebo after 8 days (effect size d = 0.33; p = 0.011). This represents a small-to-moderate effect and a statistically meaningful difference despite the short supplementation window.
However, no consistent effects were found for knee flexion or extension strength — the primary lower limb strength outcomes. Perceived soreness, fatigue, and total quality of recovery also did not differ meaningfully between groups at any time point.
The authors suggest that the handgrip improvement may reflect a neuromuscular benefit of short-term Ashwagandha use, potentially relevant for upper limb performance demands in handball such as throwing and catching. The absence of lower limb effects may reflect the biomechanical specificity of Ashwagandha's acute actions or simply insufficient dosing duration to elicit systemic strength adaptations.
The 8-day period was chosen to simulate acute supplementation during competitive periods, making it practically relevant but potentially too short to reveal the full ergogenic potential documented in longer-term Ashwagandha studies. The authors call for studies of greater duration to confirm or extend these findings.
