Tart cherry juice supplementation may support the recovery of select functional and inflammatory markers following exercise-induced muscle damage in trained athletes, but the evidence remains heterogeneous and of low-to-moderate certainty, according to a new systematic review and meta-analysis published in Sports Medicine Open.
The analysis included 19 randomized controlled trials and was conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines, with databases searched through December 2025. The study examined physical, biochemical, and perceptual recovery markers across multiple time points following exercise-induced muscle damage.
Results showed that tart cherry juice supplementation significantly improved maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) recovery at all assessed time points—immediately post-exercise through 96 hours—with effect sizes ranging from ES=0.63 to ES=4.82. Countermovement jump (CMJ) performance showed significant improvement only at 48 hours post-exercise (ES=1.41). C-reactive protein (CRP) was significantly reduced from immediately post-exercise through 48 hours (ES=-0.46 to -0.68).
However, no significant pooled effects were found for muscle soreness, creatine kinase (CK), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), or range of motion. Substantial heterogeneity was observed across studies (I²=69–93%), and sensitivity analyses indicated that statistical significance at several time points was driven by individual studies rather than consistent effects across the literature.
The authors emphasize that while tart cherry juice shows promise as a recovery aid, cautious interpretation is warranted given the low-to-moderate quality of evidence, and further high-quality trials are needed to draw more definitive conclusions.
