📖 *Eating Disorders and Disordered Eating in Figure Skaters: Prevalence, Associations, and Athlete Experiences* |
Figure skating sits at a unique intersection of athletic performance and aesthetic judgment, where lighter bodies are assumed to jump higher and visual appearance shapes scores. But behind the sparkle, a persistent threat looms: eating disorders. A new cross-sectional study sheds light on how prevalent these conditions are — and what drives them.
Researchers at Boston Children's Hospital surveyed 57 adolescent and young adult figure skaters aged 13 to 25 (75.4% female) using an electronic REDCap questionnaire. Standardized screening tools for eating disorders (ED) and disordered eating (DE) were paired with open-ended questions exploring personal experiences around body weight, shape, and food choices.
The results are striking: 35.1% of skaters screened positive for ED or DE. Over half (51.8%) reported receiving comments about their body weight or shape, and these comments were significantly associated with a positive ED/DE screen (P < 0.01). The message is clear — external commentary on appearance is not harmless; it is a measurable risk factor for disordered eating behaviors.
Perhaps even more concerning is the low awareness of related health risks. Fewer than 16% of participants had ever heard of the Female Athlete Triad or Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs), meaning most skaters lacked basic knowledge of how under-fueling threatens bone health, reproductive function, and cardiovascular integrity.
The study has limitations. Its cross-sectional design prevents causal conclusions, and the sample size is relatively small. Yet the consistency of the association between weight-related comments and ED/DE screening results sends a compelling signal.
For coaches, parents, and skating organizations, the takeaway is actionable: stop commenting on athletes' bodies. Periodic nutrition education and psychological support should be integrated into training programs. Skaters themselves should be taught to recognize REDs warning signs — persistent fatigue, menstrual irregularity, stress fractures — and understand that sustainable performance requires adequate fuel, not perpetual restriction.
