Hamstring injuries are among the most common during sprint acceleration. Understanding hamstring activation patterns is crucial for injury prevention and rehabilitation, and the effects of horizontal resistance during training are of practical interest.
This study analyzed the effects of horizontal resistance (0, 10%, and 20% velocity decrement) on spatiotemporal variables and high-density surface EMG of the biceps femoris long head and semitendinosus during maximal sprint acceleration in 10 trained male football players (5 with sufficient signal quality for regional analysis).
At matched speed, no spatiotemporal differences appeared across resistance levels, but semitendinosus EMG was higher at 0% than 10% resistance during the swing phase (P=0.001). At maximum speed, moderate differences emerged in step length and frequency, with semitendinosus EMG higher at 0% versus 20% during stance (P=0.001) and 0% versus 10% during swing (P=0.004). Centroid analysis revealed individual-specific shifts in the region of highest EMG amplitude within muscles.
Moderate horizontal resistance has small or no impact on global hamstring EMG or sprint mechanics but may induce individual shifts in regional muscle activation patterns. The very small final analysis sample (n=5) is a limitation.
When introducing resisted sled sprint training, moderate loads (around 10% velocity decrement) may enhance acceleration while reducing hamstring injury risk compared with heavy loads (20%+). Progress loads gradually, particularly for athletes with prior hamstring injuries.
