Coaches and physical therapists looking for a simple way to increase lower-limb training intensity without adding external load have a research-backed option: raise the platform height during drop lunges.
Researchers from Halic University and Marmara University in Turkey investigated how platform height affects lower-limb muscle activation and vertical ground reaction forces during forward drop lunges. Twenty-three active male athletes (mean age 21 years; height 178 cm; body mass 70 kg) performed drop lunges from three heights—0, 10, and 20 cm—onto a force platform while surface electromyography recorded activity in the biceps femoris, vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, and vastus medialis muscles.
During the eccentric (landing) phase, significant differences in biceps femoris and rectus femoris activation were found across heights (P < .05). In the concentric (rising) phase, all muscles except the left vastus medialis showed significant differences based on height (P < .05). Vertical ground reaction forces increased significantly with each height increment (P < .05).
The most practically important finding was a linear relationship between platform height and concentric phase muscle activation. This means that as height increased from 0 to 10 to 20 cm, quadriceps activation increased in a proportional and predictable manner. This linearity makes platform height a useful and measurable variable for applying progressive overload in training design.
Additional observations included significantly higher concentric versus eccentric phase activation and greater left-side than right-side muscle activity, the latter highlighting the importance of monitoring bilateral asymmetries during lunge training.
For sports rehabilitation and strength and conditioning contexts, these findings support the use of drop lunge platform height as an effective tool to progressively increase lower-limb training stimulus without the need for external weights. This is especially relevant in early rehabilitation phases where load management is critical, or in field settings where equipment is limited.
