📖 *Mediterranean diet enhances endurance training adaptation through gut microbiota-derived short-chain fatty acids* |
The Mediterranean diet is known for health benefits, but evidence that it enhances athletic performance has been scarce. A joint team from Liaoning Normal University, China, and Hanyang University, South Korea, conducted a 12-week randomized controlled trial focusing on the gut microbiota and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) pathway.
Sixty competitive endurance athletes were randomly assigned to either a Mediterranean diet group (n=30) or a control group (n=30), both following the same training program. Gut microbiota was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and SCFA concentrations were measured via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Fifty-five participants completed the study.
The Mediterranean diet group showed increased gut microbiota alpha diversity (Shannon index: +11.2%, p=0.002) and higher abundance of Faecalibacterium and Roseburia. Plasma propionate increased by 42.1% (p=0.005) and butyrate by 57.9% (p=0.002). VO2max improvement was greater in the Mediterranean diet group (2.4±1.6 vs. 1.3±1.4 mL/kg/min; adjusted difference: 1.1 mL/kg/min; 95% CI: 0.3-1.9; p=0.006; Cohen's d=0.73).
Mediation analysis revealed that plasma propionate accounted for 23% of the dietary effect on VO2max. Both propionate (r=0.38) and butyrate (r=0.42) changes correlated positively with VO2max improvement.
In short, the Mediterranean diet alters gut microbiota composition, increases SCFA production, and these SCFAs help mediate endurance training adaptation — a gut-muscle axis mechanism.
For endurance athletes, this provides a compelling reason to incorporate Mediterranean diet staples: olive oil, nuts, fish, vegetables, and whole grains. Performance enhancement comes from dietary change itself, not from probiotic or SCFA supplements. The caveat: this study covered 12 weeks, so long-term effects need further verification.
