There are moments when the deepening wrinkles in the mirror or the struggle to climb stairs feel cruel. Almost everyone has dreamed of turning back the clock to maintain their youth or, at the very least, living a long life free from disease. For a long time, the scientific community has sought the key to this "eternal youth" within the genes of our cells, and a recent study has brought that possibility one step closer.
Participating in this research, Professor George Church's team published their findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The study was conducted as an animal trial using laboratory mice. The research team precisely observed the changes that occurred when two key genes were injected into the body using a delivery vehicle called Cytomegalovirus (CMV).
The core of the research focuses on two genes: Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase (TERT) and Follistatin (FST). Telomerase acts as a "biological clock" that determines cell lifespan by preventing the shortening of chromosome ends during cell division, while Follistatin is involved in increasing muscle mass by blocking substances that inhibit muscle growth. As a result of injecting these genes into the mice, the research team observed remarkable results: the average lifespan of the telomerase-treated group increased by 41.4%, and the follistatin-treated group saw an extension of 32.5%.
The benefits extended beyond mere longevity. The mice that received gene therapy showed suppressed rapid weight loss typically associated with aging, and hair loss was noticeably reduced. In particular, their ability to regulate blood glucose improved significantly, and their physical performance remained close to that of their youth. This suggests that the decline in physical function caused by aging can be effectively defended at the genetic level.
The convenience of the delivery method is also noteworthy. The research team utilized both injectable and intranasal spray methods, and both successfully delivered the genes safely to various organs. This demonstrates the potential to prevent or treat age-related diseases simply and without the need for complex surgery. Another key achievement proven by this study was the cessation of structural collapse in the mitochondria, the energy powerhouses of the cell.
However, it must be clearly understood that this research is currently at the animal testing stage and was conducted on mice, not humans. Additional clinical trials are essential to determine the long-term side effects or immune responses that may occur when gene therapy is applied to the human body. Furthermore, as the paper was retracted during a subsequent academic review process after its initial publication, it is advisable to view these results as a suggestion of the potential direction of gene therapy rather than as absolute fact.
While we cannot directly receive this gene therapy in our daily lives today, there are ways to practice the goals this research aims for. To maintain muscle strength—the role of Follistatin—it is important to engage in resistance strength training at least two to three times a week. Additionally, to slow cellular aging, one should increase the intake of vegetables rich in antioxidants and ensure at least seven hours of sleep per day to allow time for cellular recovery.
Science foretells a future where maintaining youth may be as simple as a nasal spray. However, until such technology is perfected, we must remember that the most reliable "gene therapy" to support our physical functions remains the sweat we shed today and the maintenance of regular eating habits.
