Open water swimming takes place in an environment entirely different from the pool. Waves, currents, and variable water temperatures challenge thermoregulatory systems. Both hypothermia and hyperthermia are risks depending on water temperature and race distance.
This study characterized core temperature responses and preparation practices of elite open water swimmers competing in European Aquatics events. Researchers measured core temperatures before and after races and surveyed preparation strategies including heat acclimation, water temperature acclimation, and insulation or cooling measures.
Water temperatures below 18 degrees Celsius tended toward hypothermia, while conditions above 25 degrees favored hyperthermia. Most swimmers employed pre-race thermoregulatory preparation, but methods and effectiveness varied considerably. Swimmers with greater water temperature adaptation experience showed smaller temperature fluctuations. Longer race distances amplified individual variation in thermal responses.
This research demonstrates that thermoregulation during open water competitions affects both performance and safety. Limitations include heterogeneity in race conditions and constraints in temperature measurement timing.
Open water swimmers should conduct temperature-specific acclimation training before competitions. For cold water events, gradually increase cold water exposure one to two weeks beforehand and practice with thermal wetsuits. For warm water events, pre-cooling strategies and hydration plans are essential. On race day, core temperature monitoring is important for safety.
