Teaching VO2max and the determinants of endurance running performance remains one of the more challenging tasks in exercise physiology education. Researchers at Purdue University Northwest have published a project-based learning (PBL) model designed to make these concepts more accessible and engaging for students in advanced human physiology courses.
The approach, described in a report published in Advances in Physiology Education, begins with instructor-led coverage of foundational topics including muscle physiology, metabolic pathways, expired air analysis, VO2max, and lactate threshold. Students then join one of three groups to prepare and deliver presentations on specific subtopics.
Group 1 focused on the history of VO2max, including the use of the Douglas bag and the distinction between VO2max and VO2peak. Group 2 examined the central and peripheral rate limiters of VO2max — covering cardiac output as the primary central constraint and muscle mitochondrial capacity as a peripheral factor. Group 3 addressed additional determinants of endurance performance, including lactate threshold and running economy.
The course also incorporated a dedicated laboratory session in which students performed expired air analysis firsthand, observing the relationship between exercise intensity and shifts in carbohydrate versus fat utilization. The instructor additionally provided a real-world context by presenting sport-specific VO2max and lactate threshold testing data from hockey players.
The instructors concluded that this project-based framework was an effective way to deepen student comprehension of VO2max and endurance performance. The active, collaborative format encourages students to engage critically with primary literature and synthesize complex physiological concepts — an outcome that passive lecture formats often fail to achieve.
For educators in sports science and kinesiology programs, this model offers a replicable template for structuring aerobic capacity coursework that bridges theory and practical application.
