University life brings with it a unique convergence of stressors: academic pressure, social uncertainty, career anxiety, and major life transitions. Understanding what psychological resources protect mental health during this critical period is increasingly urgent. A new study from Turkey highlights three interconnected factors: psychological flexibility, self-compassion, and mindfulness.
Published in *Frontiers in Psychology*, this cross-sectional study by researchers at Istanbul Gelisim University and Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University examined the direct and indirect effects of these three constructs on mental health in Turkish university students. The team used SPSS 26.0, AMOS, and the Hayes PROCESS macro (Model 4 multiple mediation with 5,000 bootstrap samples) for statistical analysis.
The results were clear and statistically robust. Psychological flexibility showed a strong positive correlation with mindfulness (r = 0.712, P < 0.01) and self-compassion (r = 0.762, P < 0.01), as well as a significant direct correlation with mental health (r = 0.668, P < 0.01). Crucially, multiple regression confirmed a significant direct relationship between psychological flexibility and mental health (b = 0.1769, SE = 0.0536, P < 0.001). Students with higher psychological flexibility were better able to handle stress, showed greater self-compassion, and demonstrated stronger mindful awareness.
The study concludes that psychological flexibility exerts a significant and complex influence on student mental health, with mindfulness and self-compassion serving as important mediating pathways.
As a cross-sectional study conducted in a single country, causal inference is not possible, and results may not generalize across different cultural and educational contexts.
Practical takeaway: University wellness programs should incorporate training in psychological flexibility through Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), self-compassion practices such as self-kindness journaling, and mindfulness meditation. For student athletes, cultivating these three capacities can simultaneously support mental health and enhance performance resilience under competitive pressure.
