Athletes wobbling when speaking during competition or coaches shouting instructions during balance-demanding moments—dual-task interference between speech and balance is well-documented, but its neural basis has remained unclear.
This study tested the hypothesis that dual-task interference between speech and balance arises from shared premotor area resources. Researchers compared brain activation and task performance in healthy adults across balance alone, speech alone, and simultaneous dual-task conditions.
Balance performance significantly degraded under dual-task conditions compared with the single-task condition. Functional brain imaging revealed that premotor areas were engaged by both speech and balance tasks, and simultaneous activation produced resource competition. Overlapping activation was observed particularly in the supplementary motor area and inferior frontal regions.
This study explains dual-task interference through a premotor resource-sharing model. The implication is that demanding verbal instructions during complex motor skill performance may be counterproductive. Limitations include simplified laboratory tasks that may not capture real sports complexity.
In coaching practice, prioritize visual demonstration and physical guidance during skill acquisition, reserving verbal explanations for rest periods. Avoiding speaking demands during balance-critical movements is a sound principle.
