Plyometric training is widely used in basketball programs to develop explosive leg power, but its independent effects — when applied without concurrent strength training or other modalities — have not been systematically quantified. A new meta-analysis published in Frontiers in Physiology addresses this gap directly.
Researchers from Qufu Normal University and Universiti Sains Malaysia searched major databases through September 2025 and identified 17 eligible studies involving 444 basketball players. All included studies compared standalone plyometric training against control conditions using randomized controlled trials or quasi-experimental designs.
Using a random-effects model, pooled Hedges g effect sizes revealed significant improvements in both countermovement jump (CMJ: g = 0.77, 95% CI 0.42-1.11) and squat jump (SJ: g = 0.86, 95% CI 0.52-1.20) following standalone plyometric training. Heterogeneity was minimal for squat jump outcomes (I squared = 0.5%), indicating highly consistent effects across studies. Heterogeneity for countermovement jump was considerable (I squared = 67.6%), which may reflect variation in training protocols, athlete characteristics, or measurement approaches.
A smaller but statistically significant effect was found for 20-meter sprint performance (g = -0.39, 95% CI -0.72 to -0.05, I squared = 0%), suggesting that plyometric training confers modest sprint benefits but its primary strength lies in vertical power development.
Subgroup analysis based on training duration showed no significant differences in countermovement jump outcomes, suggesting that both shorter and longer interventions produce comparable results — a finding with practical value for coaches working within time-constrained training blocks.
The practical implication for basketball practitioners is clear: standalone plyometric training can serve as an effective and independent training stimulus for enhancing vertical jump performance, particularly squat jump. It may be especially useful during periods when concurrent strength training is not feasible or when targeted jump power development is the primary goal.
The authors call for more standardized intervention designs in future research and highlight the need to account for moderating factors such as training volume, athlete age, and competitive level.
