Teenage athletes are taught to sacrifice for their team's success. The stronger their sense of belonging to the team, the more willing they become to conform to pressure in pursuit of better performance. But new research suggests this very same team loyalty might actually work against anti-doping efforts.
Researchers at Shenyang Sport University published their findings in February 2026 in *Frontiers in Public Health*. They surveyed 1,718 adolescent athletes with an average age of 18 from sports schools across 15 Chinese cities and used structural equation modeling to examine the relationship between group norms and anti-doping behaviors.
The initial finding was clear-cut: when group anti-doping norms were strong, athletes were significantly more likely to reject doping (regression coefficient β = 0.54, p < 0.001). But alongside this encouraging result came a troubling discovery. The stronger an athlete's team identity, the weaker this positive effect became. Team identity actually dampened the relationship between anti-doping norms and actual behavior (indirect effect = -0.194, accounting for 35.8% of the total effect).
What does this paradox mean in practice? The researchers described it as a fundamental conflict of interest. Strong team identity can cause athletes to prioritize team success over personal health and ethical values. When winning becomes everything, rules can be bent. Team-level pressures begin to contradict the very health messages these programs try to promote. The stronger the sense of "us versus them" on the team, the more an individual athlete's personal judgment gets overridden by collective team interests.
The study's central insight challenges conventional thinking about how to prevent doping in sports. Individual-focused education—teaching athletes about the health dangers of performance-enhancing drugs—isn't enough. Anti-doping programs need to operate simultaneously at the group level. This means explicitly shaping shared team norms against doping, identifying and empowering peer leaders to champion these values, and fundamentally redefining team identity around health and integrity rather than pure winning. Strengthening team cohesion without addressing the underlying performance-driven pressures may actually backfire.
Practically speaking, coaches and sports organizations can take concrete steps based on these findings. First, make anti-doping values a visible part of team culture—not just a one-time lecture, but consistent messaging during team meetings and training sessions. Second, recruit respected athletes as "anti-doping ambassadors" within each team; peer influence carries more weight than authority figures. Third, and most importantly, reshape how team success is defined and celebrated. Rather than glorifying athletes willing to take any risk to win, highlight stories of athletes who maintained integrity and still achieved excellence. When team identity is anchored to ethical performance, not just victory at any cost, the protective effect of group norms becomes genuine.
