Complex training that pairs a heavy strength exercise with an explosive movement is a popular method for inducing post-activation performance enhancement. But not all training structures deliver the same results, and a new study reveals that cluster sets combined with accentuated eccentric loading may actually undermine the effect.
Researchers from Coastal Carolina University and collaborators from New Zealand and the UK enrolled 12 participants (6 men and 6 women) in a randomized crossover study. Participants completed lower-body complex training under two conditions: a traditional method (TRD) using conventional back squat sets paired with countermovement jumps, and a cluster sets plus accentuated eccentric loading condition (CS+AEL) in which back squats incorporated 20-second inter-repetition rest intervals and countermovement jumps used 30% body mass dumbbells on only the first of three repetitions at each post-squat time point.
Countermovement jumps were assessed at baseline and at 1, 2, 4, and 6 minutes after completing the back squat conditioning activity. The traditional method produced a significant increase in peak power at 2 minutes post-squat compared to baseline (effect size g=0.46). In contrast, the cluster set condition produced a significant decrease in peak power at 4 minutes compared to baseline (g=-0.73).
Repetition-level analysis revealed further differences. Under the cluster set condition at the 4-minute mark, peak power on repetition 2 (g=-0.85) and repetition 3 (g=-1.28) were both significantly lower than repetition 1, indicating a progressive deterioration of power output across repetitions. The traditional method showed peak power elevation at 2 minutes on repetition 3 (g=0.72).
The researchers suggest that the combination of cluster sets and accentuated eccentric loading may impose sufficient accumulated fatigue to suppress post-activation performance enhancement, with the rep-to-rep decline in peak power under CS+AEL being a key mechanism. The eccentric overload adds a mechanical stress that, when combined with repeated efforts, may tip the balance from potentiation toward fatigue.
For strength and conditioning professionals, the implication is clear: the specific structure of complex training, including inter-repetition rest intervals, loading patterns, and the sequencing of eccentric demands, critically determines whether the intended post-activation performance enhancement response is achieved or inhibited.
