There was a time when ginger was regarded merely as a spice, similar to how some view sweet potatoes. However, recent scientific research has re-evaluated ginger as a natural ingredient with various physiological benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, as well as the ability to improve blood circulation. Ginger is gaining attention as a natural ergogenic aid in the field of athletic performance, primarily because of its potential to alleviate oxidative stress and inflammation occurring during exercise. Despite this, its actual impact on endurance performance remained unclear. To address this, a recent study published in the sports science journal *Sports (Basel)* systematically analyzed the effects of ginger supplementation on cycling performance.
The study was conducted as a randomized, double-blind experiment involving 24 healthy men. Participants were divided into two groups: one that consumed 2g of ginger extract daily for eight weeks and a placebo group. Throughout the experimental period, participants engaged in moderate-intensity cycling for 60 minutes three times a week. Upon completion of the study, various indicators were measured, including maximal oxygen uptake (VO₂ max), time-trial performance, blood lactate levels, and heart rate.
The results showed that the ginger supplementation group experienced an average increase of 3.5% in VO₂ max compared to the placebo group. As a key indicator of aerobic capacity, this suggests that ginger may contribute to increasing energy efficiency. Furthermore, in a 40km time trial at a speed of 30km/h, the ginger group showed a 2.1% improvement in time. This is interpreted as ginger potentially reducing energy expenditure or enhancing endurance during exercise.
More interestingly, ginger supplementation reduced blood lactate levels by 15%. Since lactate is a primary cause of muscle fatigue during exercise, this supports the hypothesis that ginger can increase exercise sustainability by inhibiting lactate accumulation. However, it is important to note that ginger supplementation did not have a significant effect on total energy expenditure or maximum heart rate. The researchers suggested that ginger might improve post-exercise recovery speed and emphasized the need for further research to confirm its long-term effects.
The significance of this study lies in demonstrating the potential of ginger to be used as a natural performance-enhancing supplement. Unlike synthetic supplements, ginger offers the advantage of being a natural ingredient with fewer side effects. Nevertheless, the study emphasizes that the results are limited to short-term effects and that further research is required regarding the optimal dosage and the safety of long-term consumption.
Natural supplements are currently gaining popularity in the field of sports science. Findings that natural ingredients like ginger can help improve athletic performance provide new options for both professional athletes and fitness enthusiasts. However, it must be remembered that the effects of ginger supplementation may vary depending on an individual's constitution and exercise intensity, necessitating a personalized approach. As more data on optimal dosage and intake methods are accumulated through future research, ginger is expected to play a larger role in the field of performance enhancement.
