What separates a fast volleyball player from an explosive one? Is the athlete who can change direction quickly also the one who can sprint the fastest? And how much does raw leg power drive all of it? A study from Tunisia puts numbers to what coaches have long suspected -- that lower-body power is the common thread running through speed, agility, and jumping performance in youth volleyball.
Researchers at the High Institute of Sport and Physical Education at the University of Jendouba recruited 31 youth volleyball players for a cross-sectional study measuring the relationships between lower-body power, linear sprint speed, change of direction (CoD), and horizontal jump performance. Published in Tunis Med in November 2025, the study measured absolute and relative peak leg power via a laboratory force-velocity test (FVt). Field performance was assessed through a 5-jump test (5JT), a 20-meter sprint with splits at 5, 10, and 20 meters, and a change-of-direction test (CoD).
The correlations were both statistically strong and practically meaningful. Absolute peak power (FVtPpeak in watts) showed high correlations with every phase of the 20-meter sprint: r=-0.858 at the 5-meter split, r=-0.707 at 10 meters, and r=-0.762 at the full 20-meter mark. It also demonstrated a high correlation with change-of-direction performance (r=-0.745). Relative peak power (watts per kilogram) showed a good correlation with 5-jump distance (r=0.531). These results confirm that the most explosive players are consistently also the fastest and most agile on the court -- across multiple independent performance measures.
The study's real-world value lies in bridging laboratory testing (FVt) with practical field tools, giving coaches a framework to interpret performance data across modalities without expensive equipment. Limitations include the modest sample of 31 players and the mixed-sex youth population, which may reduce generalizability. Sex-stratified and age-group analyses in larger samples would strengthen the evidence base.
For coaches and athletic trainers working with young volleyball players, the message is direct: invest in lower-body power development. Structured resistance training (squats, lunges, hip thrusts), plyometric programs (box jumps, depth jumps, bounding drills), and periodic force-velocity profiling allow coaches to track development objectively and identify which athletes need additional strength-speed work before the competitive season. The 5-jump test is a simple, reliable field tool that can be incorporated into regular training assessments.
